Kid Print
That is what they call it at school. All of the pressure is off to 'know' automatically how to spell things, just sound it out.
I am so glad for this frame of mind. I was so nervous when Q started pre-k because she was so hard on herself (still is in far too many ways). She would sit down to draw something and if it didn't turn out how she had planned in her head she would get so frustrated, throwing things away, crying etc. And heaven help us if I tried to help her and I couldn't produce either!!!
I wondered how she would be in school. As she started printing she was hard on herself. Somehow she thought she should already know how to write. As much as I could I'd try to talk her through it... we all have to practice and learn, no one just knows how to do it.
Now she is in Kindergarten and on to writing. She loves it! I am so glad. She loves writing notes and giving 'homework' to G. She is writing all of the time! I am glad she feels safe writing. She will even ask if she is spelling right and isn't so hard on herself is it's not correct. For the most part we let her go with it. Our language is so messed up and there are so many untrue rules and sounds, that it's amazing we all learn it!
Here are a just few samples of her fabulous work. The one at the bottom is priceless! As soon as Matt saw it he said, 'Take a picture of that, Rod will love it!'
the bug book about science and inside are bug eyes and our names
she messed up on Owen's name, but turned her M into an exclamation point
as I have loved you love one another by his commandment
Now, in Q's bedroom, above her bed is vinyl lettering... Princess, daughter of a king. I gave her some scrap stuff to play with and with her little 'princess' sticker she wrote what is on her wall.
a little closer...
She is such a sweet girl, and I was so pleased with her artwork... and I couldn't help but chuckle!
